Supercharged Nissan Hybrid System

Auto maker Nissan is working on an advanced supercharged engine that will be mated to a hybrid power plant for the upcoming Nissan Leaf, along with other models.

This new hybrid, which will be available at Vaden Nissan in Hinesville, GA, one day, connects a supercharged 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine with CVT transmission, electric motor, and lithium-ion battery pack.

Details on fuel economy will depend on the vehicles themselves, though Nissan "seems to have set out to build a system that is equal parts performance and fuel economy."1

Superchargers provide more baseline power than turbo chargers. There is no denying a supercharged hybrid system could deliver huge amounts of low end torque, pleasing most of the anti-hybrid crowd.

Other reports suggest the new hybrid system will likely debut in next-gen Nissan Altima or Nissan Maxima vehicles, working with all engines that are between 2.0 and 3.5 liters, as well as with Nissan's performance V6.
